Homework #2 P18 4. There are 4 cycles in this supply chain, and the location of the push/pull boundary is shown as follows: Distributor/Publisher Supplier 6. The way a firm like Amazon manage its supply chain flows-product, information and cash- affect the success or failure of it. Amazon started by filling all orders using books purchased from a distributor in response to customer orders. (1) To better measure the product flow-especially the inventory and transportation- can lead to the success of a firm. It has six warehouses where it holds inventory, which stocks best-selling books. Amazon uses the U.S. Postal Service and other package carriers like UPS and FedEx to send books to customers. (2) The sophisticated information exchanges also helps to ensure the success of supply chain. The real time data on the current state of demand are significant for a firm and its supplier to get access to the latest production requirements, which could ensure the satisfaction of customer orders .(3) The success of the supply chain is facilitated by its effective management of cash flow. By managing receivables and payables very closely, the firm are able to collect cash from its customers before it has to pay its suppliers. In summary, supply chain decisions plays an important role in the success or failure of a firm.
