1 • What about human biology are we going to be studying in this course? – We are going to learn basic human anatomy and physiology Anatomy (= “to cut up”) = the study of body structures (the “what”) Physiology (= “the study of nature”) = the study of body functions (the “how”) So this is essentially a survey course on the general study of the human body’s structures and the functions of these structures (which are closely related to one another) Welcome to BIOL 164 (Human Biology)! 2 Characteristics of living things • In general, living things : – 1. Contain nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids (Ch. 2) – 2. Are composed of cells (Ch. 3, 19, 21) Cells can grow, differentiate, and reproduce themselves – So human organisms can grow, develop, and reproduce
