Middle East Technical University Department of Chemical Engineering April 7, 2011 ChE 222 – Fluid Mechanics HOMEWORK VI (Due April 14, 2011) 1. Rotating viscometer : It is desired to measure the viscosities of sucrose solutions of about 60% concentration by weight at about 20 o C with a rotating-cylinder viscometer. This instrument has an inner cylinder 4.0 cm in diameter surrounded by a rotating concentric cylinder 4.5 cm in diameter. The length L is 4.0 cm. The viscosity of a 60% sucrose solution at 20 o C is about 57 cp, and its density is about 1.29 g/cm 3 . The past experience shows that a torque of 10 4 dyne.cm corresponding to a torque uncertainty of 1%, appears reasonable if the resulting Reynolds number is in the stable laminar range. What will be the resultant angular velocity at this condition? Calculate the Reynolds number to check whether the flow is laminar or not. 2. Radial flow between two coaxial cylinders : Consider an incompressible fluid, at constant temperature, flowing radially between two porous cylindrical shells with inner and outer radii
