Name: __________________ Date: __02-7-2011 __ TA signature: _________________________ Experiment #: __4b _________ Chemicals to be Used Today: Silica gel Unknown - acethyl ferrocene - ferrocene - 9-fluorenone tBME 8% tBME/ petroleum ether 15% tBME /85% petroleum ether Equipment to be Used Today: Laboratory hood 6 inch micro column Cotton Sand Conical vial Spatula Test tubes, 13x100 mm Test tube rack Plastic pipette Procedure: Dry column packing: 1. Remove the plastic tip of a 6 inch micro column and place a small wad of cotton inside the tip. Do not pack the cotton too tightly. Clamp the column to a stand. 2. Add a thin layer of sand (3-5mm) and tap the column to make the surface of the sand horizontal. 3. Add silica gel to the column until it is a little less than half full. Tap the column to make the surface of the gel horizontal and settled. Dry column loading: 1. Weigh and record ~100mg of unknown and transfer to a conical vial. 2.
