Current cell theory: All living things are or are made up of cells The cell is the structural/functional unit of all living things All cells come from pre-existing cells by division Cells contain hereditary information which is passed from one generation to another Cells trap and use energy to build, the molecules that make them up(metabolism and biochemistry) Amino acids are the subunits for protein, Nucelotides are for DNA and RNA, Carbohydrates are for polysachrides and lipids Lipids and Polysaccharides serve mainly as structural molecules Lipids are constituents of cell membrane Polysaccharides are the constituents of cell walls 6 protein functional classes: o Structural: form components of structures in the cell o Catalytic: (enzymes) catalyze (speed up) the chemical reactions in the cell o Regulatory: bind to DNA, RNA or other proteins and change which proteins are made by the cell o Transport: are membrane proteins which transport chemicals in and out of the cell o Recepter/ signaling: bind to chemicals in the environment and transmit signals to other parts of the cell o Force generating: Move the cell itself For an increase in size 10x the SA increases by 100x and Volume increases by 1000x, SA/Volume ration decreases by 10x Lag Phase : Period of time after addition of cells to a culture during which the cell number does not increase. If cells that are added werer previously growing under same condition there may not be a lag phase. Exponential phase : cells divide as quickly as they can while they use the energy/nutrient source in the medium, can only divide as fast as the nutrient is available. Stationary phase : Cell number stops increasing. Cell divide and dying and this is balanced. Cells adapt to conditions of low nutrients and possible inhibitory metabolic products Death phase : Division slows and Cell death increases, cells that are living adapt to conditions where they are living on material
