3M INVESTMENT ANALYSIS Introduction There are countless factors that play into the decision of whether or not to take a  position in a company. To make things harder, there is no template or simple list of rules  to follow that neatly tell a company how to invest. Some combinations of factors can  lead you in one direction or the other. When examining 3M, there are several factors that  positively reflect 3M’s good standing, and that will intrigue any company to taking a  position in the multinational corporation. These factors include such things as the 3Ms’  Share Price, ROE, Price/Earning ratio, Growth, Profit Margin, and EPS. 3M Company History 3M Company (3M) is a diversified technology company with a presence in various  businesses, including industrial and transportation, healthcare, display and graphics,  consumer and office, safety, security and protection services, and electro and  communications. The Company is a diversified global manufacturer and marketer of a  variety of products. 3M manages its operations in six business segments: Industrial and  Transportation; Health Care; Display and Graphics; Consumer and Office; Safety,  Security and Protection Services, and Electro and Communications. 3M was founded in  1902 by five businessmen, in a small town in Minnesota called Two Harbors. The  business was built on the idea of mining a mineral deposit that was used as an

3M INVESTMENT ANALYSIS abrasive. 3M paid their first dividend of 6 cents per share in 1916. Since that first  dividend, 3M has paid dividends on a quarterly basis without interruption. Sales soon  topped the $1 million mark by 1919, with a net income of 32%. Today 3M produces over  60,000 products and has operations in more than 63 countries. They sell their products  to 200 countries around the world. The company employs over eighty thousand people  throughout the world.   Share Price 3M (MMM) is a publicly held company and is traded on the New York Stock Exchange.  3M has a market capitalization of $56.2 billion with 709.54 million shares of common  stock outstanding. According to 3M’s company site, the share price as of 2011 is $76.88,  which is an increase of approximately 25% from the share price of $57.54 in 2008. Over
