Social deviance is behavior that violates social norms and arouses negative social reactions (Barkan,2012). Social deviance can be informal such as picking your nose in public, where it is not illegal but it is frowned upon in society. Formal deviances are acts against the law like running red lights or in extreme cases murder. Social deviance contributes to social problems because deviance changes over time making deviant acts within society more lenient causing them to happen more frequently. One example of this is stealing. When a person in poverty steals food for their children, although it is illegal, normally they do not go to court and are let off with the deviant act because they are missing the essentials of life. This issue then grows because prosecuting those who steal is becoming less enforced based on their motives, therefore making stealing normalized contributing to larger social problems. II.Explain how social deviance perpetuates the opioid crisis on a micro and macro level. The social issue at hand is the opioid crisis and the impact that its addiction has on society. The opioid crisis is the growing usage of drugs which include everything from heroin and fentanyl to prescription pills like oxycodone, hydrocodone (Vicodin), codeine and morphine.Social deviance perpetuates the opioid crisis on a micro level because people begin to abuse theirprescription medicine.
