R ELATIONSHIP BETWEEN COPORATE GOVERANCE AND CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Corporate governance and social responsibility are strongly correlated in the 21st century business environment. Business Dictionary points out that the traditional meaning of corporate governance is the methods used by companies to protect its financiers (e.g., investors and creditors). However, new expectations from other stakeholders have forced companies to broaden the focus of corporate governance to include accountability to customers, suppliers, employees, the government and community. This ethical accountability to stakeholder groups is the essence of corporate social responsibility (CSR) The reason corporate governance has expanded in recent years is because of violations of public trust by prominent companies like Enron. The As You Sow Foundation notes that the Enron accounting scandal, along with other prominent business scandals, have forced companies to develop more internal control of ethics.
