Notes on Ray Anderson and the Business Logic of Sustainability - Business and industry has been the biggest culprit in the degradation of the natural environment and Earth’s biosphere. They are also the only institution that is large enough and pervasive enough to make a difference and get us out of this mess. - He was described as a plunderer, a recovering plunderer, and then the greenest American CEO in 5 years. That was a sad commentary on American CEOs in 1999. - He said that theft was a crime, and that theft of our children’s future was a crime. However, there must be a viable alternative to this way of life. A big problem is the extraction, manufacturing, production, and over-consumption of materials. So Ray Anderson changed this cycle. Extracting must be replaced by renewable, linear by cyclical, fossil fuel by renewable

Unformatted text preview: energy, wasteful by waste-free. In the ensuing 12 years, net greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by 82%, sales have increased by 2/3rds and profits have doubled. This must happen all around the world by 2050. His carpet and tile industry has sold 85 million square yards of climate neutral carpet. He hopes to have zero impact and zero emissions by 2020. Also known as Mission Zero, it has been incredibly good for business. Costs are down, not up. People like having to work together for a common purpose. He wants to make people happier with less stuff.- If he was a petroleum-intensive company and has come this far, anyone can do it. Tomorrows child is the one most at risk. It is up to us on our short stay on this Earth to hurt it or help it....
