Brian Lau English 200 D Andrew McNair 4/25/07 Reading Response #9 The introduction starts out with, “The kings of Great Britain had assumed the right of appointing colonial governors.” This is because back then in the early 19 th century, many European powers were trying to conquer the globe. These big powers were sending out crew ships left and right to every point of the Earth that they can in order to expand their powers. Every time a new continent or some piece of land was found, it was colonialized. And so the “kings of Great Britain” had the power to appoint a “governor” to rule the land. The setting takes place in a New England colony because apparently, that is where Robin’s kinsman, Major Molineux dwells. It takes place at night because it brings about a mysterious force into the story. This “force” creates an illusion that things may not be what they seem. For example, in the story there was two-faced man. At first glance, Robin thought he was just a guy. Then when he got close to him, he noticed he had two faces. One side of his faced
