Bio 121 Lecture 5 – Photosynthesis A. Life is solar powered a. Light energy chemical energy (Photosynthesis) b. Most of energy for life on earth comes from photosynthesis c. CO2 + H2O + light CH2O + O2 + ATP B. Historical Perspective a. By 1850 scientists figured out 6 things a.i. Increase in carbon was due to CO2 a.ii. Nitrogen in plants came from Soil a.iii. Plants require light and chlorophil in order to growth a.iv. Plants give off oxygen in the day and CO2 in the Dark a.v. Plants do respiration 24 hours a day, photosynthesis only in the day a.vi. Thought that CO2 was split to give O2 (NOT CORRECT) C. Splitting H2O a. Discovered in 1930s by C.B. vanNeil b. CO2 + H2S CH2O + H20 + 2S (bacteria) c. 6CO2 + 12H2O + light C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6H2O D. Two stages of photosynthesis a. Light reaction – requires light, O2, and produces things used in step 2 a.i. 2H2O + light O2 + 4[e+] + 4e- b. Dark reaction – does not require light directly (just products from light cycle) b.i. CO2 + 4[H+] + 4e- CH2O (sugar) + H2O b.ii. NADox NADPre + ATP E.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
