Q1. Western Marine Shipyard Limited should plan effectively to convert its competencies and resources into competitive advantage. Answer: WMSL located in Chittagong on the River Karnaphuli which gives it geographical advantages. Bangladesh has low construction cost and fewer strict regulations. This gives WMSL competitive advantage over its international competitors. WMSL can build international standard ships. Many companies will be interested when they will come to know that they will get standardized ships at a very cheap labor and production cost. Then WMSL will have more demand on shipbuilding industry and this is how WMSL will get competitive advantage. WMSL should regularly reviews market price material and that will help them to allocate cost. Upper management should control both foreign and local procurement. Thus WMSL will have proper management. WMSL should always maintain structured supply chain process. It should maintain just-in-time and minimum stock in order to ensure availability of raw material. WMSL get 50 percent of required materials and equipment from local partners and thus it is lowering its cost and it is getting competitive advantage. The procurement department should monitor supplies and keep alternate sources open for supply in case the principal one fails that will avoid interruption in the construction process. WMSL should run with a large human resource base under a structured service policy so that employees can perform their jobs perfectly. WMSL’s growth may remain above 20 percent if technical personnel and professionals are directly involved. So this should be done. WMSL should monitor compensation package and other fringe benefit and thus employees will be motivated towards work and that will lead it towards getting competitive advantage. Also WMSL should carry out unfunded contributory employee provident and unfunded contributory gratuity fund for the permanent employee and workers profit participation and welfare fund. It will increase productivity of the employees. WMSL should give warranty of quality to its buyers and more flexible terms and conditions than competitors. In the shipbuilding welding operation, point-of-use controls can save up to an hour or more every day — per welding operator. These productivity gains can have a significant impact on the bottom line. The resulting savings translate into a quick return on investment for shipbuilding operations — sometimes within months — that justifies the conversion to remote- control technology. The ability for the operator to have complete remote control of welding processes and parameters at the point of the weld helps significantly improve productivity and
