Olympics After the closing ceremony The Sydney 2000 Games were the largest yet. Despite their size, with a record breaking number of athletes participating; they were well organised, renewing faith in the Olympic Movement. The Olympic committee also spent $6 million Australian dollars in funding to combat the use of illicit drugs in sport, that previous Olympics have had so much trouble with in the past . The money was used to enhance drugs research into detecting the use of drugs, also to increase greater involvement from participating Olympic countries into drugs testing through urine and blood before and after the athlete's event. However it was later discovered from surveys, that a tenth of the athletes used performance-enhancing drugs in these Olympics. So out of the 10,651 athletes participating, approximately
