Unformatted text preview: Research Paper: The Relationship of France and Germany after World War II Nathan Hoch POL 333 Dr . Mason 1 The relationship between France and Germany since the end of World War II is an extremely interesting case . This paper aims to discuss this relationship in the areas of economy, military, diplomacy, culture, and national identity . These areas truly capture the French-German relationship . They also show that even though these nations have had rough pasts with one another, the leaders of these nations are trying very hard to reach reconciliation, and create a very friendly alliance . In most of these areas France and Germany have created strong beliefs that align with one another . However, there are some other areas where these two nations have disagreements, but it will be shown that because these two nations truly believe there cannot be progress for the whole of Europe without them leading the way, they reach compromises quite quickly . Before each of these areas are discussed, a brief history of these two nations up to World War II regarding the relationship with one another should be looked at . The countries of France and Germany up until after World War II have had very turbulent pasts with one another . With the geographical distance between these two nations being very small, there was obviously going to have to be much contact between them, and butting heads almost seemed inevitable . From the creation of the unified German state in 1871, there has been a great deal of conflicts between France and Germany, most notably of course, the conflicts of World War I and World War II . Millions of people from 2 both countries lost their lives during these wars, and with these catastrophic losses, as was natural; bitterness rose up in these countries for each other . After World War II a friendly relationship between France and Germany anytime in the near future almost seemed outrageous . This hatred that developed between these two countries leads to the question of, what, if anything could unite France and Germany under friendly terms? That what leads into the first area of discussion, which is the economy . After World War II France was looking to modernize their economy, which was greatly necessary because French industry was greatly inferior compared to Great Britains or Germanys . Germany was also looking to expand their industrial production markets. They needed to do this to get the German economy back on track, because there were very few nations willing to trade or buy products from Germany...
