Financial Times Gripes grow over Brussesls to Strasbourg trek April 12, 2011 Journal 8 The European Parliament has to meet in Strasbourg, France once a month, and that long trek is frustrating many in the parliament. They see it as a waste of time and a waste of money. They have recently voted to make the trip eleven times a year instead of twelve. This has France in an uproar, because the meetings in Strasbourg bring in a great deal of money to the city and it shows the power of France when they hold a major institution of the European Union. They have taken this vote to the European Court of Justice, and the outcome is yet to be determined. The Parliament has found new power under the Lisbon treaty and they now think with this new

Unformatted text preview: power they should have a right to decide where they want to work. There are a few interesting issues in this article. The first being that the treaties say Strasbourg will house an institution and that they need the agreement of all 27 member states if they want to change the treaty. Secondly, this is more of a prestigious issue than anything when it comes to French outcry; they just want the ability to say they house one of the major institutions. Lastly, this shows the struggle the EU is having when it comes to satisfying the member states, no matter what they do they will be offending someone....
