Due Monday, April 2, 2012 Attitude Similarity - Research suggests when you meet someone and interact with them and discover that you are similar promotes liking and attraction. - Cognitive consistency; share the same view on an issue and “easier” to manage. - Social Validation/reinforcement; for things that are factual (ex. math problem 2 plus 5 = 7) everyone knows that, when it comes to matters of attitudes we don’t really know what’s right or wrong. A lot less certainty, we look to our environment for validation or support on our view. Don’t really need validation in the factual world; we do need it when we all have different attitudes. See it as a social reward. - Ex. predict a friends attitudes on different topics, we will predict them to have more similar attitudes to us than they really do. If we asked them they would not feel as strong about it as we said they would. - Byrne; attitude similarity is linked to liking and attraction. Known as the Byrne effect.
