Historical overview of the Windows shells
The original Windows CLI (shell) was
cmd.exe
.
As noted above, it debuted in 1993
when Windows NT 3.1 was released, and has been in every version of Windows since
then.
(Note –
cmd.exe
is NOT available on the consumer operating system platform,
including Windows 3.1, 95, 98, and Me.)
A new shell-like environment, the "
Windows Script Host
", was introduced in 1996.
It
was delivered with Windows 98 (on the consumer operating system platform) and
Windows 2000, and has been in every version of Windows since then.
