Networking terminology The networking discipline has hundreds (if not thousands) of terms and acronyms, which are used to describe technologies, features, and functionality. Be prepared to learn many of them, including these important getting-started terms and acronyms: Network, networking Ethernet Network adapter (Network interface card) LAN (local area network) and WLAN (wireless LAN) WAN (wide area network) Protocol TCP/IP Windows "workgroup" network Windows "domain" network Working with both file system and network share permissions We will discuss the "three rules" for understanding how permissions work: 1. If a user is a member of more than one group, the effective permissions are the "most permissive" combination. 2. If you are mixing file system and network share permissions, where a user is a member of more than one group, the effective permissions are the "most restrictive" combination. 3.
