He criticized Updike’s story “A&P” which was big news at the time. Genre: Drama Narrative and Tone: 3 rd Person Character(s): Neddy and all his neighbors Plot and Setting: Neddy decides to swim across the county to get home, and he does this by going through his neighbor’s swimming pools. The setting is ever-changing; as the reader goes farther into the story, Needy grows older and the seasons change quicker. Motifs and Symbolism: The swimming pool, Alcoholism, Seasonal change Main idea(s): (1) Neddy feels like a young man ready to face the world in the beginning but as the story progresses, he gets older and we start to learn about his life as time fast
