Focus: Chapter 9, Case Study 9.4: Two MomsProblem(s): In this case study, the first problem I noticed was Ms. Ribeiro’s response to the situation. Ms.Ribiero could have addressed the conversation taking place between the students and used this as a teachable moment to address topics such as diversity at home and in the classroom. However, she choseto minimize the issue and address it the next day with the whole group versus the three students involved in the conversation. As a result, another problem arose when parents contacted the principal tocomplain about the topics (homosexuality and gay marriage) be taught in their child’s class. While she was ultimately trying to make one student feel comfortable in class about her family, her decisions caused her more hurt than good. Various Perspectives: Ms. Ribeiro as the classroom teacher who works extremely hard to create a safe learning environment for her students but is uncomfortable teaching about a high controversial topic on and impromptu occasion.
