Chapter 12 Skills 1. Identify what information is conveyed in a mass spectrum: x-axis, yaxis, etc. What is a mass spectrum used for? 2. Identify the molecular ion peak and the base peak in a mass spectrum and understand their significance. 3. Propose molecular formulas of molecules based on the mass spectrum. 4. Use the molecular ion peak (M+) and it relatives (M+n) to identify which elements are likely to be present in a compound. 5. Predict the most likely products of fragmentation. 6. Propose fragmentation reactions to account for specific peaks in a mass spectrum. 7. Recall the principles of absorption spectroscopy, particularly the relationship between energy, frequency and wavelength. 8. Understand the consequences when a molecule absorbs IR radiation. What factors influence the frequency of IR radiation that is absorbed? 9. Identify what information is conveyed in an IR spectrum: x-axis, yaxis, fingerprint region, etc. What is an IR spectrum used for? 10. Identify whether or not a vibration is IR active or inactive. 11. Be familiar with the frequency (wavenumbers) of the major types of absorptions. 12. Understand the small variations in the frequencies above based on local effects (for example, resonance!) 13. Identify the presence or absence of various functional groups based on the appearance (or lack thereof) of the corresponding peaks in the IR spectrum. 14.
