Hidden Cost of Reward Lepper Study o Effects of reward on coloring behavior o Three groups of children Students asked to draw- no rewards Students told they would get a certificate if they drew (linked) o Result: children in the reward group colors less Principles of Operant Conditioning Shaping- rewarding successive approximations of the desired behavior o EX. Child trying to get dressed Chaining- starting with the last behavior and working back to the beginning o Last behavior is always associated with reward, so the animal will go through all behaviors in chain and then expect a reward. Instinctive Drift- when trained animals forget their lessons and go back to natural instincts; can be seen in human beings o EX. Rock climbing and realizing you have gotten too far Schedules of Reinforcement Based on number of responses o Fixed-Ratio o Variable-Ratio Based on time o Fixed Interval Schedule
