Nicole Katzman Consumer Science 250 Hy-Vee Reflection March 4, 2012 Hy-Vee Reflection I really enjoyed Jamie Aulwes’ presentation. His story about Dwight Vredenburg, the original CEO of the company, was very inspirational. Hy-Vee’s importance on profit- sharing was extremely intelligent. The idea of coordinating employees at different stores based on race surprised me. They base the people they hire in different stores depending on the most popular race that shops there. For example, at one store there were mostly Hispanic costumers. So, they hired mostly Hispanic employees. I see that they feel this might be helping their profits, but it is also very racist. Hiring people based on race is both unethical and unmoral. One perspective of their business that I did like, however, was the face that they promote the well being of costumers, employees, communities, and the global environment. Hy-Vee has exercise facilities for employees, as well as showers. Showers enable people to run, walk, or bike to work, shower there, then be ready to do their job.

Unformatted text preview: Also, as I have previously mentioned in some of my reflections, I am very interested in store layout. The idea of incorporating different philosophies to different stores must help revenue. By this, I mean that at some stores Hy-Vee sells cheese from all over the world, but in their new store in Madison, Wisconsin, coming on January 13 th , they will only sell Wisconsin-made cheese. This is because people from Wisconsin want to help their own economy and state by buying cheese from there. I also found it interesting that Miracle Whip is stored on the bottom shelves, because when people buy it they loose money. Muffins, however, make a big profit, so Hy-Vee stores made a huge “Mountain of Muffins” to help sell them. In conclusion, I could not see myself working at Hy-Vee, in particular because I do not agree with their practice of racially categorizing stores. However, I do like some of the health benefits they have incorporated to their culture....
