Los mexicanoamericanos Between 1820-1860, 90% of the people came from Ireland, England, or Germany. o This resulted in the population being homogeneous “Gran Inmigración” from 1880-1930, 30 million people from Italy, Poland, Russia, and other places with distinct nationalities came to the U.S. from all over Europe. Today, the “Nueva Oleada” is Hispanic immigrants: Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, and Cubans. o This group has many distinct characteristics, because they are not really “immigrants”. A lot of them have lived in the U.S. for many years. Hispanic presence is most evident in the southern United States. o Signs in many stores say “se habla español” o New Mexico-half the population comes from Hispanic origin o Most of these people are Mexican Americans or Chicanos. 1846-1848: Mexican American war. Mexico lost Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, as well as parts of California, Nevada, and Colorado. (Treaty of Guadalupe) U.S. gained 1/3 of Mexico’s land The old Mexican citizens who were now living in American territory got to decide if they wanted to remain there or go back to Mexico. Most decided to stay--Not a deliberate migration! Treaty of Guadalupe: guaranteed religious and cultural liberty to the Mexican Americans and recognized their rights regarding property However, they faced a lot of hostility and lynching between 1865-1920 Mexican Americans became a source of manpower
