Michelle Riesenfeld Section 304 Thursday February 23 Reaction Paper #5 In Jared Diamond’s article, “What’s Your Consumption Factor?” the problem of figuring out how to grow our economy while decreasing our consumption rate is addressed. The article is a reminder that collectively, we in the Western society are our own worst enemy. Just as Diamond reiterates in his article, the standard of living in many countries equals or exceeds many parts of the United States, but the per capita energy use in other countries is much lower. “A real problem for the world is that each of us 300 million Americans consumes as much as 32 Kenyans. With 10 times the population, the United States consumes 320 times more resources than Kenya does.” This proves that there is a major difference in per capita consumption between the United States and other third world countries. The problem resides in the fact that people in the United States are living beyond their material comfort, for “living standards are not tightly coupled to
