Michelle Riesenfeld Section 304 Thursday March 8 Reaction Paper #7- Generating Awareness, Taking Action The article, “Global Warning: Get Up! Stand Up!” by Bill McKibben addresses the need of people to “build a mass movement to halt climate change.” McKidden discusses that “Washington has utterly and completely failed to take on the single greatest challenge human civilization has ever faced.” This challenge is to deal with climate change, and prevent the world as we know it from becoming destroyed. The idea that we need a movement may be obvious to educated people and environmentalists, however for many people, it remains in the back burner simply because people have become so set in their lifestyles that they are not willing to make any changes to the way they live. McKibben mentions that perhaps the problem lies in the modernity of our world. While modernity has brought miracles to our economic life, it is also the very thing that has brought disaster to our environment. This reflects what Dave Cieslewicz brings up in “City Ethic: Urban Conservation and the New Environmentalism.” He writes, “Despite
