Michelle Riesenfeld September 26, 2011 Jewish Studies 211 Kevin Mattison Dr. Jonathan Sarna Dr. Jonathan Sarna began teaching in 1979 at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati. After finishing his work there in 1990, Dr. Jonathan Sarna continued his teaching career at various other institutions, including Yale University, University of Cincinnati, Brandeis University and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Aside from his teaching profession, Dr. Jonathan Sarna has also written, edited and co-edited more than twenty books. His best-known book is American Judaism: A History , which serves as a clear illumination of his knowledge of Jewish history across past centuries. Sarna’s lecture speaks to an order issued by Major Ulysses S. Grant on December 17 , 1862, known as General Order No. 11. This act that occurred during the American Civil War, became infamous for its instructions of the removal of all Jews in his military district, which consisted of Tennessee, Mississippi and Kentucky.
