Michelle Riesenfeld TA: Kevin Mattison Section 301 Tonight’s lecture was given by the author of the book God versus Gay? , Jay Michaelson. Jay Michaelson was a religious orthodox Jew who thought coming out would be the end of his religious life. He speaks about choosing God’s side for those years of his life before he came out to the world about his sexuality, and says that he believed that coming out would be the end of his spiritual practice. Jay honestly believed that lying to everyone he knew about being gay was something that God wanted him to do, for he thought it was part of his religious obligations. However, Jay confidently proclaims that in fact, coming out turned out to be the beginning of his religious life because for the first time he was able to be an honest and truthful human being. Although when Jay first came out he engaged in numerous conversations with people who were interrogating him, about what they believed as a hypocritical decision to be both gay and Jewish, Jay Michaelson expresses that it is not just about the Hebrew
