Planets Around other Stars: text: section 7.3 History : 4th Century B.C. o Epicurus - infinite Universe with infinite number of worlds o Aristotle - Earth is unique - at center of Universe (surviving viewpoint) late 1500's o Copernicus - argues that planets orbit the Sun o 1590's Giordano Bruno suggests other stars have planets o Feb. 1600 Bruno burned at the stake October 1995 o first extrasolar planet detected July 2000 o 55 confirmed planets around other stars November 2001 o 76 confirmed planets around other stars Observations : large planets (easier to see) orbit relatively close to their stars orbit more elongated ellipses than our solar system planets see figure 7.13 in text How do we "see" other planets? direct observation o small, faint object next to large bright object o very difficult !!
