Proof Positive: Measuring the Motions Just in case anyone is still in doubt, or finds this whole notion hard to swallow, there is  now yet more absolutely compelling evidence for plate tectonics.  We can now routinely  measure the plate motions,  and have determined, for example, that Europe and North  America are drifting apart about as quickly as your fingernails are growing. This is actually an astronomical problem, and relies on the existence of remote  reference points (the stars and galaxies). Here's an easy way to think about it. Suppose  you and your friend were on the equator, but directly opposite each other on the Earth.  You would see the sun pass overhead (your 'local noon'), and then, exactly twelve hours  later, your friend would see the same thing; and so on, in strict, regular alternation. But suppose you discovered some slippage in this pleasant rhythm? Suppose, for
