The Smoking Gun: Magnetic Remanence Despite the growing body of evidence, and the coherence of the emerging  understanding of what really  must  be going on, there was a lot of resistance in  geophysical circles to the notion of plate tectonics. In the 1960s, fresh evidence was  found that finally won over the vast majority of scientists. This came from measurements  of what is known as  magnetic remanence  in the seafloor rocks. To understand this, you need to know two straightforward things:   1. the Earth's magnetic field, which is what makes our Boy Scout compasses point  to the North Pole, occasionally and spontaneously reverses direction. (In the new  situation, our compasses would point the other way.) The Sun's magnetic field  does this quite regularly, every 11 years or so; the Earth is less metronomic in its  regularity, but on average this happens every million years or so. (There are ways
