§ 4.4  Equivalent force systems
Motivation :
Forces applied to many
structures and machines are actually
distributed , rather than discrete.  Because
distributed forces can be complicated, we’d
prefer to replace them with simpler equivalent
forces if we can do that.  The purpose of this
section is to establish a set of rules for
turning complicated force distributions into
simpler, equivalent ones .

Transmissibility: In our discussion last week, we indicated
that we could slide a force anywhere along its line of action
without changing the way it affects a body’s motion.  This
is called the principle of transmissibility .

Moving a force away from its line of action : If we move a
force from its original line of action to a different one, we
change the extent to which that force imparts rotation.  We
are permitted to do this only if we compensate by providing
a force-couple (moment) of sufficient magnitude and
direction to produce the original motion (c).  Because the
force-couple (moment) is a free vector, it can then be moved
anywhere on the body without changing its effect (d).
