Franklin Roosevelt- Democrat. 32nd President (33-45). NY legislator and Governor and US assistant of the Navy. President in heart of the depression. He proposes New Deal to create a repeal of prohibition, give aid for the unemployed, and increase government spending. (3Rs) relief-unemployed, recovery- businesses and economy, reform-US economy. With this, elected Pres and served for longest reign in US history. Expanded size of Federal Gov’t more than any other president. He created financial recovery programs such as the FDIC, home owners loan corp, emergency banking relief act… After many complaints, he created a second new deal which had similar goals as the first new deal. Married to Eleanor. Paralyzed from waste down b/c of polio. Socially, wrote a newspaper column, gave speeches & travelled. One of greatest Presidents. Eleanor Roosevelt-First lady from 33-45. Warm personality, great speaker, inspirational. Important leader. FDR’s “legs”. Most active 1 st lady in US history. Advocated for civil rights. Co-founder of Freedom House. After husband died, she still spoke, was an author, and activist for New Deal. Delegate to UN General Assembly. Feminist. She worked to enhance the status of working women in the 1940s, and supported/helped found the formation of the United Nations. She was active in politics for the rest of her life. WPA- late 30s. Part of 2 nd New Deal. Works Progress Administration. The WPA did the same jobs as the PWA. 5 years spent billions of $ providing people with jobs. Made new bridges, roads, airports, public buildings, (our stadium). Hired artists, actors, and writers to perform and paint murals, write histories. Proposed by FDR-boosted morale. 1939 the largest New Deal agency gave money to state governments to employ millions to carry out public works projects. It fed children and redistributed food, clothing, and housing. Almost every community in the United States had a park, bridge or school constructed by the agency. It provided jobs and helped build things and improve areas, provided relief for African Americans.
