Organic Factors (vascular, endocrine, neurological – 10-20%) 1. chronic illness – impairs nerves 2. Diabetes –endocrine system, nerve damage a. men - leading cause of erectile dysfunction b. women – secondary anorgasmia 3. arthritis – depression, chronic pain 4. cancer – impair all systems a. ovarian cancer 5. muscular sclerosis – myelin sheath, nerve damage 6. cerebrovascular accidents – strokes 7. disabilities – sexual needs same as anyone else’s needs a. spinal-cord injury (SCI) – sensory amplification i. paraplegia (legs), quadripledia (arms/legs) b. cerebral palsy – lack of muscular control c. blindness/deafness 8. medication – psychiatric, antihypertension, antihistamines, gastrointestinal B. Cultural Factors 1. negative childhood learning 2. double-standard 3. narrow definition of sexuality 4. performance anxiety 5. messages that encourage women to be sexually passive
