Chapter 17 – Sexual Transmitted Diseases Incidence & Prevalence Top ten diseases: 50% STDs, 87% cases 80% of STDs occur 15-29 age group Contraction Ratio: 1 out of 4 in lifetime More than 12 million/year (25%: Teens) 56 million have incurable STD 17 billion dollars/year medical bills Outcomes: Death, cancer infertility, skin bacteria or viruses (invades, reproduces, lives in cells to disrupt normal cellular activity) 1. Gonorrhea –bacteria Oldest & one of the most Common STD 2 million new cases each year 75% new cases: age 15-29 Males: higher rates African American: higher rates Discharge, PID, Circulatory o penicillin o males-smelly cloudy discharge, burning o females-green discharge, no syptoms 2. Syphilis Spiral-shaped bacteria (corkscrew-like) 120,000 new cases each year sexual contact, blood transfusions o penicillin 4 stages o primary: chancre sore (2-4 weeks) o secondary: flu symptoms (1-24 weeks) o latent: no visible symptoms, spreads o tertiary: serious heart, eye, brain, death occur on penis, mouth, vagina rates are lower in past few years (1 in 4 reported) 3. Chlamydia-400% increase ’87-98
