Sikes Interdisciplinary Science II Grand Canyon Lab Late Achaean: Deposits were made in the present Grand Canyon area in lowlands and a shallow sea appeared Early Proterozoic: Deposits of thick marine sediments were made and then severely distorted and deformed over time by rising magma from the earth’s center. This deformation created early Grand Canyon Mountains. Mid Proterozoic: Erosion removed the previous Grand Canyon mountains and left a flat plain Late Proterozoic I: Limestone, shale, sandstone, and a thick sequence of Dox sandstone are deposited. Tensional forces cause fractures to form. Late Proterozoic II: The Grand Canyon becomes even more distorted because of rotation on gravity faults, and erosion of the tilted fault blocks isolates strata. Early Devonian: The shallow sea begins to rise because of sandstone, shale, and limestone deposits. Late Mississippian: The Devonian, Silurian, Ordovician and Late Cambrian sediments erode.
