Deception 19:23 Theoretical Underpinnings most deception detection is based on a fairly simple theory deceptive behavior stress/anxiety aberrant behavior this applies to polygraph testing… vocal stress analysis basic nonverbal communication Polygraph Testing looks at changes in autonomic nervous system arousal heart rate blood pressure respiration galvanic skin response all of the above respond to stress/anxiety none are voluntary only 10% or less of testing is related to creating charts most is the pretest preparation… convincing you that the machine will catch you making sure you know the consequences of faillure giving you every opportunity to tell the truth pr confess to what you have done what is said in pretesting is every bit as important as what is said on the polygraph Three types of questions asked during a polygraph All of them are yes or no Control/irrelevant, non-stress inducing
