Avonelle and her family lived in fear of contracting the illness and kept to themselves in their small apartment. Newspapers and, occasionally, the radio, were their connection to the outside world. Avonelle read the following accounts of an incident in Chicago that resulted in the deaths of a young African American boy and 37 others in what became known as the Red Summer.
