Physical Change Examples: Tearing a piece of paper Inflating or deflating a basketball Mixing different solids (e.g., solid sand and iron filings) Mixing solids and liquids (e.g., sugar or salt in water) Changes in the state of matter Melting, freezing, vaporization, condensation, sublimation Cola Problem Fatima balances two cans of cola, one closed and one just opened. After the open can of cola goes flat, what will happen to the pan on the right? Problem 2: Conservation of Mass After Air Leaves Open Cola Children’s reasoning “Air seeps” into the “open cola.” The right pan will “move down.” “Air goes out” of the open cola. The open cola becomes “lighter” and the pan will “move up.” (Asghar 2004, 2011) Fatima balances two cans of cola, one closed and one just opened....
