Nathan Pike Wednesday 6PM Bethany Wigington Experiment #5 Introduction: The purpose of this lab was to learn how to accurately measure the volumes of gases and calculate the molar volume at STP. Then this information was used to determine the molar volume of the specific gases. Part 1: 2H 2 O 2 (l) Catalyst → 2H 2 O (l) + H 2 (g) Part 2: Mg(s) + 2HCL(aq) → MgCl 2 (aq) + H 2 (aq) Discussion: To measure the volume of gas produced by the reactions, an Erlenmeyer flask (A) was connected to a 500mL flask (B) by a rubber tube. Then the flask was connected to a 600mL beaker with another rubber tube. The apparatus was then checked for leaks and the pressure inside and outside flask B was equalized. When the catalyst or reactant was mixed with the H 2 O 2 (l) or Mg(s) the reactions produced a gas whose pressure forced water out of flask B and into the beaker. The amount of water displacement was measured and varies directly to volume of produced by the reaction.
