If Knox had told me his story and I was his manager I would not have reacted harshly. I actually agree with James Borg’s opinion within the article: “Indeed, many people confuse persuasion with manipulation because they have never considered the difference between the two. Persuasion is all about relationships and, therefore, the long term. If the outcome is not pleasing to both parties, the relationship eventually crumbles. Manipulation aims to satisfy the needs and wishes of only one party, with no regard for – and often at the expense of – the other.” (Humphreys, J. 2009) I agree that Knox should have been upfront about knowing who Dale Landry was and who he worked for, but other than that I think his tactics were persuasive and achieved a positive outcome for both Dale Landry’s company Armadillo and Specialty Fleet Services (SFS). Sometimes in order to cultivate a relationship you need to show interest in the interests of others. You do not have to necessarily share those interests but be
