Ghidaoui Problem Set 2 Due at: 16:30; March 15 th 2012 at Lecture Theatre C Problem 1: Consider the test tube shown in figure 1 which is filled with stagnant water. A contaminant of concentration 100 g/m 3 is introduced at the left end of the pipe and is maintained at this value thereafter. The concentration at the right end is maintained at 0 g/m 3 ? Assume D= 10-9m 2 /s. a) Compute the steady state flux of the contaminant. b) Determine the steady state profile of contaminant concentration. Figure 1 Problem 2: Consider the water in the canal shown in figure 2. The width of the canal is 20m and the depth of water in it is 5m. The canal has a rectangular cross section. An oil spill of 20kg occurs suddenly and instantaneously (i.e., over a very short period of time). The current is assumed small. D=0.01m 2 /s. a)
