K50 Qualitative Rubric Criteria Poor (0-5) Unsatisfactory (6) Fair (7) Good (8) Excellent (9) Superb (10) Thesis (20%) Analytical thesis statement No attempt is made to articulate an analysis. Author attempts, but fails, to articulate a clear analytical statement (does not have a discernable analysis and/or the analysis is not demonstrable). Author does not address the assignment. Author does not have a clear analytical statement and/or does not guide the reader into the body of the paper. Author does not address some aspects of the assignment. Analysis is present, but the reader must reconstruct it from the text and/or thesis statement is a mere re-stating of information covered in lectures, readings, or class discussion. Author addresses most aspects of the assignment. Essay contains a clear and original analytical thesis statement--i.e., lets the reader know exactly what the author is trying to communicate. Author fully meets the parameters of the assignment. Clearly and eloquently articulates a nuanced central analysis, provides the reader with a clear sense of the nature of evidence that will follow, guides the reader smoothly and logically into the body of the paper. Author demonstrates a nuanced grasp of the course themes, is able to synthesize this knowledge in new ways and relate to material not covered (but applicable) to the course, adds to insight to the subject not provided in lectures, readings or class discussions.
