Lyell showed that the particular assemblage of a species is restricted to a particular region, and it will expand as far as its physical environmental barriers will allow. Species adapted to one type of environment, but a change in that environment could cause numbers to dwindle away to extinction. Sir John Herschel wrote A Preliminary Discourse on the Study of Natural Philosophy , where he outlined ‘empirical’ and ‘causal’ laws. William Whewell saw adaptation as proof of creation, that there were no causes in our experience that could produce a well-adapted species. Charles Darwin sailed on the H.M.S. Beagle under Captain Fitzroy from December 1831 to October 1836, where he made extensive collections of animals, plants, fossils, and rocks. Darwin’s idea of
