Name:________________________________________________________________________ POP QUIZ: PROCESS ANALYSIS The following steps make up a process and have the activity times shown. The steps must be performed in the sequence shown. 1. At the present time, one person is assigned to each step. What is the cycle time and the utilization of this process as it is presently organized? 2. Assume that the existing cycle time, which you identified in question 1, is sufficient to meet current customer demand. How would you reorganize the line to maximize its utilization? Specify how many people you would have, and the specific activities that each of these people would be performing. Remember that you cannot change the sequence of the activities. What would be the utilization of your reorganized line? 3. It is Monday morning. The line is completely empty. Using your reorganized line from question 2, how many units of output will be completed after exactly eight hours of operation? Step Task time (minutes) A 6 B 3 C 19 D 7 E 5 F 4

The steps must be performed in the sequence shown. 1. At the present time, one person is assigned to each step. What is the cycle time and the utilization of this process as it is presently organized? From the in-class, Lego block simulation, remember that we are using the course pack definition of cycle time (and not the definition given in the main text—as I noted, this is one of those situations where the same term is used to mean two entirely different things). The definition that we are using is the average time between completion of successive units of output . From the simulation, you should also remember that the cycle time of a process is the cycle time of the bottleneck. In this question, one person is presently assigned to each of the six tasks that make up this process; this means that there are six work stations. Obviously, Step C has the longest task time and, therefore, the longest cycle time at 19 minutes. This is the cycle time of the process, as it is presently organized. Utilization = (time activated)/(time available)
