Megan Gueli Monday 2-4 pm Due: March 12, 2012 Laboratory Report 5 R UNNING E CONOMY : E NERGY C OST OF R UNNING A M ILE Purpose: In this laboratory, 4 subjects ran part of a 10 minute mile on a treadmill at a controlled pace and in a controlled environment, while Oxygen consumed, and calculating Net Caloric Expenditure was recorded. Data found was ultimately used to look at how body mass and body composition effects how Oxygen and therefore energy is consumed during physical activity. Results: Table 1: Summary Table of Subject Characteristics, VO2 consumed, Relative VO2 consumed, Resting Metabolic Rate, and Net Energy Expenditure. Net Energy Expenditure was calculated using the Harris-Benedict Equation, all other values were taken from the peak point of the data, or averages of peak data, depending on the found results.
