Through naturalistic observation, informal interactions, and interviews a basic case study on the spirited six year old, Megan, was conducted in order to gain a greater understanding of child development through the coined early years of development. Megan, a second-grade student, is currently growing up in a Caucasian upper-middle class family, with a little sister, Melissa, and married parents. Both of Megan’s parents graduated from the University of Michigan with Bachelor Degrees, and her father went on to finish Law School as well. Currently Megan’s father is a successful civil Lawyer, and her mother is a home-keeper by choice. Megan seems to have several opportunities presented to her, and is currently enrolled in a variety of extra-curricular activities. Megan was fortunate enough to not have experienced any birth complications or major illnesses in the first six years of her life. Living a very structured life, Megan not only goes to public school Monday through Friday, but also participates in several extracurricular activities. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after school Megan goes to several hours of dance classes after school. Saturdays are used for her private swim lessons. Then on Tuesday and Sunday Megan participates in an hour of group ice skating lessons, followed by a private lesson on the ice. Megan lives busy days, and therefore has a lot of structure in her life. She not only routinely goes to bed at 8pm every night, but is expected to act appropriately or discipline is sure to follow. Eating a balanced diet, filled with green beans, apples, and chicken nuggets, she seems to get most of her recommended nutrients. While much of her day is scheduled down to the minute, according to Megan’s mother, Lynn, Megan does have time to play each day. Always being quite the spirited child, Megan never seems to fail to entertain. From being the class clown, to transforming into the showgirl at home, one of Megan’s best qualities seems to be her outgoing and loving personality. Between the combination of Megan’s outgoing and positive

temperament, her involved parents, and her privileged lifestyle Megan is likely to find success later on in life. At a height of 3 feet and 2 inches, Megan is slightly smaller than the average six year old. However, her short stature does not necessarily mean any deficiencies in growth. With a mother who is 5 feet and 2 inches, and a father who is only 5 feet and 8 inches it is expected that Megan too will be shorter than the average person. However, her proportions are lean, and adult-like, with her legs making up approximately 50% of her body. Ultimately suggesting that Megan’s physical development is on target, implying that her nutrition intake is adequate for the many growth spurts expected throughout the early and middle childhood years (Berger, 2011).
