Arenson 1 Haley Arenson David Harrisville History 313 Question One Parents want to provide their kids with the knowledge that they’ll need to know for the future. They begin teaching them as they are very young and continue to share their experiences and what they’ve learned with their children in hopes that the child will learn from their mistakes and use the knowledge to better the world in some way or another. Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus was among these parents. He wanted to provide information for his son in order to help him manage when he would become emperor. Constantine did so by writing De Administrando Imperio . In this he shared his knowledge of foreign affairs including wars, religions and cultural practices of different places in Byzantium. In these extensive historical accounts with information about foreign policy, Constantine speaks directly to his son. “Fix, my son, your minds’s eye upon my words and learn those things which I command you…” (Jenkins 67). By doing so, he makes it seem like these documents are private from the public and were created for the sole reason to share this information with his son to aid him when he is emperor. However it seems as though this document wasn’t just written for his son’s eyes only but instead that it was intended to be read by the court in order to not only impress others with his extensive knowledge on foreign affairs but to also present the idea of a medieval game of Risk. The first way in which it can be argued that Constantine VII didn’t write the De Administrando Imperio for only the purpose of a secrete treatise for his son is the way in which he addresses his son. In the writing, Constantine refers to his son and directly speaks to him, however the parts in which he directly speaks to him are in random places in the text and seem

In one of the longer sections Constantine speaks about the ”Nations Neighboring the Turks.” In this section, he rambles on about intermarriage between different nations and other events in which are to be considered a disgrace in a serious and impersonal tone.
