HEALTH EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION Hangover Result of over consumption of alcohol  Results from the fact that ADH and ALDH produce a lot of lactic acid   has to be  cleared Dehydration Alcohol is a powerful  diuretic , a drug that increases urine production Liver Disease Acetaldehyde formed in alcohol metabolism attacks proteins, damaging enzymes Damage liver structures   leads to liver disease Women are at greater risk of liver disease,  cirrhosis    alcoholic liver disease Eventually destroys the liver, the center of chemical transformations in the body Heart Disease and Blood Pressure Moderate alcohol intake raises levels of HDL (good cholesterol), which reduces  risk of heart attack Compound called resveratrol, found in red wine, reduces blood clotting  reduces heart attack and stroke Certain intakes can also raise blood pressure   heart disease
