INTRODUCTION Balance, moderation, and variety United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) - part of the federal  government that provides most nutritional advice and education AN ECOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE As a result of shortages over time, humane genes have shown adaptation to  them Genetic adaptations made during earlier ages are less useful now bc our  environment has changed We now eat in excess but our bodies are adapted to live with deficiency, so we  end up storing the extra fat  NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Essential nutrients   chemicals our body requires The body requires an essential nutrient to operate normally; it cannot synthesize  an essential nutrient Essential means a nutrient must be present in the diet for good health DIETARY REFERENCE INTAKES (DRI’s) Give specific recommendations for intake of each nutrient based on the body’s  physiological needs
